Abstract

Breast cancer is a disease that affects millions of women from all regions of the planet. Since its incidence is quite high, it is possible to identify numerous ways of coping with the disease. The objective of this work is to describe and understand possible associations between religious involvement and coping with the disease for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The data used in this study were collected among patients from a public hospital in Belo Horizonte. First, a socioeconomic questionnaire was applied to characterize the women interviewed, then an interview was carried out in the hospital itself, based on a semi-structured questionnaire developed by the authors. The analysis of the interviews was carried out using the thematic content analysis (CA) method. In all, 19 women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer were interviewed. It was observed that the women interviewed pointed out that the illness experience served as a teaching and strengthened their religious convictions. They also pointed out that their faith played a fundamental role in their coping process, the meaning of the disease and the search for a cure. It was noticed that the interviewees created a cycle in which both religious convictions and their perception of health are seen as strengthened.
