In the face of the serious impacts caused by the covid-19 pandemic in Brazil, the article seeks to elucidate Bolsonarismo’s discourses in relation to death, given two fundamental concepts: the suicidal drive and the denial of mourning. In order to understand the affects guiding the Brazilian president in the current crisis, we explore the concept of the Suicidal State, mainly upon the elaborations of Michel Foucault, and its developments associated with the pandemic in Brazil, as detailed by Vladimir Safatle. In addition, we consider Judith Butler’s ideas about the grief, considering the denial of a state of vulnerability in the face of the virus. The results of our investigation seek to contribute to the reflections on how Bolsonarismo, and fascism in general, deal with death, and how, in a context of a health and social crisis, their fantasies resulted in thousands of losses, accompanied by the denial of a collective grief.
