Social Representations, elderly, COVID-19Abstract
Studies show that elderly men are the group at higher risk of contamination and death by Covid-19, due to biopsychosocial factors. Social Representations (SR) play an important role in social practices as they guide the actions of groups. In this sense, the present study aimed to investigate the SR of elderly Brazilian men about Covid-19 according to their group membership and feelings generated by the pandemic. Therefore, an exploratory-descriptive and comparative study was carried out, backed by the Social Representations Theory (SRT), with the participation of 106 men. The results pointed to a possible central nucleus composed of the elements of care, fear and virus. When comparing the SR according to political belonging, there are controversial SR. The right-wing group, even though it understands the need for care and is afraid, has uncertainties about the disease, while the other groups brought elements more related to prevention. Finally, feelings of malaise, of missing someone, concerns, resilience and hope were the most generated in the elderly due to the pandemic.
