The assumption of critical normative theory formulated by Axel Honneth is that the lack of social recognition in the intersubjective relationships is the main cause of conflicts articulating changes in society, being inherent to the foundation of intersubjectivity, as much as for such subjects. Such experiences may be the origin of the strive for recognition to restore the moral integrity of an individual. From a literature review, notably from the work recognition Fight: the moral grammar of the moral conflicts (2003) and authors that precede and her dialogue, the objective of the present article is to discuss the main theoretical contributions on which Honneth elaborate his thesis on the moral grammar of social conflicts, yet presenting the patterns of recognition that constitute the formal conception of Honnethian ethics – the love, the legal sphere and social esteem – that, when satisfied, promote self-confidence, self-respect and self-esteem, respectively. Moreover, this article briefly presents how the State can interfere in these dimensions and the strive for recognition in the public sphere, notably the adjudication of rights and the attribution of a social value to individuals from the sympathetic assent.
