Our goal is to understand the meanings and senses that lesbian women attribute to the experience of building their sexual orientation. Considering the social visibility of the LGBT movement in recent years, the same situation cannot be attributed to female homosexuality, since lesbianism still suffers forms of discrimination, even within the movement itself. We chose the phenomenological method and the reflections of Maurice Merleau-Ponty to perform the analyses of the speeches of three lesbian women living in the inland of the state of Bahia. The results indicated three categories: “Atmosphere surrounding the discovery of lesbianism”; “Unveiling yourself as a homosexual: taking responsibility for being out of the norm”; and “(Re) existence: performances of sexuality”. Although lesbians may enjoy a certain degree of freedom compared to previous generations, they still encounter several obstacles to experiencing their sexuality, whether in the family or in society as a whole. Other social markers in addition to gender and sexuality, such as race / ethnicity further aggravate prejudice.
