Abstract

This article intents to test the hypotesis that the lack of transportation facilities was the main reason to the late development observed in Sao Paulo’s Northern East Coast, composed of four cities: São Sebastião, Ilhabela, Caraguatatuba e Ubatuba. From a historical analysis (the late eighteenth century to 1960), based on data on the main economic activities, infrastructure and population, we attempted to describe a history of industrialization in the region by comparing it to the Vale do Paraíba Paulista.
