Abstract

The work retraces some aspects of the history of Taubaté - located in the Paraíba Valley, São Paulo - through the collection of visual media (photography) scanned by the Museum of Image and Sound Taubaté (Mistau). It starts with the idea Kossoy (1989), which includes images as documents of history, for the development of a reading about the characteristics of the city of São Paulo. The methodology is grounded in qualitative research of images, which gives rise to the interpretation of the signs that make up the scenes recorded in 1329 photos analyzed and divided into categories. In conclusion, one can say that the collection of digitized Mistau reflects the unique aspects of cultural, ethnological and human municipality, with emphasis on those that identify its characteristic traditionalist such as churches, clubs and families, and reinforce their rural identity through crafts and folklore.
