Abstract

No século XVII, a interiorização da colonização portuguesa na América Meridional realizou-se por meio de empreendimentos chamados bandeiras, que articulados à hierarquia administrativa da Coroa, traduziam uma complexa relação de equilíbrio de interesses, na qual os paulistas adentravam o território para satisfação necessidades particulares, como a escravização de índios e aquisição de terras, e serviriam, ainda que indiretamente, como agentes da política da Coroa e braço armado do Império Colonial, que garantia a presença portuguesa no interior do Estado do Brasil. Esses homens, que andavam praticamente nus e descalços, desenvolveram uma cultura peculiar, que integrava costumes e saberes nativos à tecnologia e ambição europeias, contribuindo para o sucesso da grande lavoura de exportação, pelo fornecimento de escravos, alimentos e produtos de primeira necessidade aos engenhos.
