O significado da palavra “república” no título do diálogo A República de Platão

Abstract

Na sociedade contemporânea, o diálogo A República, de Platão é apresentado, muitas vezes, como um

exemplo de uma teoria democrática ou pré-democrática. Tem-se uma visão otimista e positiva desse diálogo.

Boa parte dessa visão é fruto da palavra “república” que aparece no título desse diálogo. Este artigo procura

discutir o sentido dessa palavra. Essa discussão é realizada de duas formas. A primeira é a análise do título

grego do diálogo, politeia, cujo sentido etimológico é constituição ou forma de governo de uma cidadeestado.

A segunda é a inserção da discussão realizada por Platão na sociedade grega do século IV a.C.
