In this article, we explore the paths that led to the possible (mis)encounter between two important intellectuals of the 20th century – Mário de Andrade and Anísio Teixeira – during the 1930s. The latter founded the University of the Federal District, where the former was invited to teach in 1938, during his "exile in Rio" (Castro, 1989). However, they do not seem to have met in person during the years they taught at UDF, as from 1935, Anísio had to go into "exile" due to the persecution of intellectuals considered left-wing. The educator spent ten years in Caetité (BA), dedicated to translations and his family business. Through a combination of epistolary, oral history, and bibliographic review, we seek to reconstruct the experiences of Anísio and Mário, while "exiled" in the Estado Novo, observing their peculiarities, as well as their relationships with transnational experiences or other authors, in order to trace (or not) networks of sociability between them.
