Resumo

Glamorgan é um condado histórico do País de Gales, limitado a sul e a oeste pelo Canal de Bristol, no qual as estruturas defensivas são um tema frequente e persistente no que diz respeito ao seu patrimônio e história. Além dos inúmeros castelos, fortalezas e fortificações Galesas, o país também possui relíquias da Guerra Civil Inglesa e da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Vários deles perdidos ou demolidos, porém muitos ainda perduram. Em vista disso, pergunta-se: que papel essas relíquias remanescentes desempenham na sociedade? É comum aceitar que o propósito delas eram de autoproteção, fornecendo defesa contra ataques durante incursões e guerras. No entanto, quando os conflitos e as guerras passam e o interesse das pessoas em suas histórias e patrimônio aumenta progressivamente ao longo dos anos, como o País de Gales administrou esses restos e o que eles significam? Alguns argumentaram que manter ou conservar restos militares depende da gestão futura do governo e que exige uma reformulação deliberada da história. Com base nesses fatos, este artigo tem como objetivo mostrar e discutir evidências de danos, destroços e derrotas ao longo do tempo causadas pela guerra no histórico condado de Glamorgan. Como métodos de pesquisa, o uso significativo de mapas e imagens mostrará a extensão dos danos, e, estudos de caso individuais serão considerados ao longo deste artigo para contribuir para a discussão de diferentes tipos de patrimônio e histórias perdidas no tempo.
